Overview

Located on Main Street in Medford, Wisconsin, La Chapinita Latino Grocery Store & Taqueria offers an authentic Guatemalan dining experience that feels both inviting and genuine. This unassuming spot stands out as a culinary gem, specializing in traditional dishes like handmade pupusas, flavorful street tacos, and rich seafood soups such as the Caldo De Mariscos. The pupusas, crafted from corn tortillas stuffed with mozzarella and your choice of fillings, arrive paired with their signature curtido—a tangy, spiced cabbage slaw—and housemade tomato salsa that strikes the perfect balance between warmth and mild spice.

The restaurant’s cozy atmosphere and limited seating create an intimate space where attentive service enhances the overall experience. The owners’ warmth and gratitude for their patrons are palpable, contributing to the welcoming vibe that keeps both locals and visitors coming back. Beyond the food, the grocery section offers an array of Guatemalan pantry staples, including dried peppers and snacks, providing a cultural extension beyond the plate.

For seafood enthusiasts, the Guatemalan-style shrimp ceviche delivers a refreshing medley of citrus-marinated shrimp, imitation crab meat, diced vegetables, and fresh cilantro—served alongside crisp crackers for the perfect textural contrast. Complementing these are traditional sides like seasoned rice and beans or their unique homemade guacamole, enriched with onions, eggs, lime, and vinegar, adding depth and freshness to the meal.

La Chapinita’s target audience ranges from adventurous food lovers exploring Central American flavors to local residents seeking quality, home-style Guatemalan fare that’s both affordable and thoughtfully prepared. The combination of authentic dishes, approachable setting, and welcoming owners crafts an experience that’s satisfying in both taste and atmosphere. For anyone in the Medford area eager to savor genuine Guatemalan cuisine, La Chapinita stands as a must-visit destination.

Excellent little restaurant on main street. We stopped in for a quick lunch Saturday and we're very impressed. The service was great and the food even better. There were about 4 tables for dine in and it was full the whole time we were there. We had the street tacos and pupusas and both dishes were delicious. Definitely stop in if you want a quick affordable meal. The market has a selection of dried peppers, pantry items, and snacks.

Hole in the wall excellent Guatemalan food in an otherwise lily-whitey town. Try the street tacos. They're excellent.

You will be hard-pressed to find a small business with better food, service or people. The portions are large and I've yet to see anyone disappointed by their food. The whole family is hardworking and kind. I can't recommend this family-owned business (or the addictive papusas they serve) enough!

Finding this hidden gem today makes me so happy! The chicharron pupusa was amazing, golden brown and crispy on the outside, gooey and super flavorful on the inside, plus a pickled cabbage salad and sauce. I’m excited to go back and try more!
